Freedom – Week 5

Freedom – Week 5 :: October 29, 2017 – David Fugoyo

Galatians 5:19-24 – “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

Biblical Freedom – Free from whatever holds you captive. No longer slaves; therefore free to be who God made me to be.

Worldly freedom – free to do whatever I want to do.

Galatians 5:19-21 – Sinful nature – fruit is “evident/obvious”

  1. sexual immorality
  2. idolatry and witchcraft
  3. improper conduct toward others

if you practice these things (live your life this way) – you will not “inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians 5:22-24 – “BUT” the fruit of the spirit…for those who submit their life to Christ

  1. Love, Joy, Peace – Relationship to God
  2. Patience, Kindness, Goodness – Relationship with others
  3. Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control – within you

Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (see also Romans 6:6, Galatians 2:20)

Truths that everyone knew in that day about crucifixion:

  1. crucifixion was for those who commit a crime – your sin is a crime against the Lord
  2. crucifixion made it painfully difficult to breathe – you must suffocate the sinful nature, don’t let it breathe
  3. crucifixion made one painfully thirsty – don’t give the flesh any water or any chance to grow
  4. crucifixion always led to death – you must fully kill the sinful nature and its desires/passions

If you are submitted to the world, you will reap fruit of the flesh

If you re submitted to the Lord, you will reap the fruit of the spirit –> where Freedom reigns

“If the Son has set you free, you are free indeed”

Freedom – Week 4

Freedom – Week 4 :: October 22, 2017 – Rusty Hutson

Galatians 4:1-7 What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

IF PAUL WERE HERE TODAY AND COULD RELATE THIS TO US IN OUR CONTEXT HE WOULD SAY A COUPLE OF THINGS IN SIMPLE TERMS:

1. Don’t Go Back!

  • Christ died so that we might experience Freedom! Not so we could go back to thing he freed us from.
  • Romans 7:25 – Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

2. Walk Forward by the Spirit

Galatians 5:1 – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Galatians 5:16-26 – So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever17 Or you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Philippians 3:13 – But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Freedom – Week 3

Freedom – Week 3 :: October 15, 2017 – Pat Bethea

Redeemed – to buy or pay off, clear by payment; exchange

Obedience to the Law had become priority over the Giver of the Law

Arguments:

  1. Galatians 3:1-5  –  Personal Argument
  2. Galatians 3:6-25  –  Scriptural Argument
  3. Galatians 3:26-29. –  Practical Argument

We don’t follow the law. We follow Jesus and anything he calls us to do.

Freedom – Week 2

Freedom – Week 2 :: October 8, 2017 – Rusty Hutson

Galatians 2:6-10

Christ came to free us from the demands of the law. The law could never give us the relationship that the work of Jesus would accomplish.

Gospel – “good news” in Greek. What is that good news? Freedom from the law, sin, and death; Freedom to live for Christ.

Truths on The Good News, the Gospel of Jesus Christ:

  1. Is About Grace

    • Ephesians 2:8-9 – grace, through faith along, a gift so that no man could ever boast in his salvation.
    • We must move from belief in our minds that this is true, then trust that it is good for us to finally, by faith, receiving the gift of salvation from Christ.
    • This gift is free, but it certainly is not cheap – it cost Jesus his life and separation from the Father.
  2. The World is Dying for Good News

    • In a world full of brokenness and pain, the news of the person and work of Christ is our only true hope
    • We, the church, have the gospel that frees everyone who believes from the bondage of this dying world.
  3. You Must Die in order to have the Gospel

    • Galatians 2:19-21 – we have been crucified with him and are not free to live in him. Jesus did not die for nothing!
    • The old life will always get heavier the longer you hold on to it.

Conviction is less about condemnation and more about invitation

Don’t let anything hinder you from the invitation to walk in the freedom that comes to those who follow Christ.

Jesus is the only thing we need in this life.

Freedom – Week 1

Freedom – Week 1 :: October 1, 2017 – Rusty Hutson

“Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— and all the brothers and sisters with me, To the churches in Galatia: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:1-4,6-7,10)

Man has always had his own idea of what freedom means.

But TRUE FREEDOM is defined by and given by God himself. It has always been his hope and plan that his people know the freedom that comes from knowing him.

Galatians will be our five week series that focuses on God’s heart of freedom for his people.

Many in that day that were convinced that man could add anything to the gospel by keeping the Jewish law on top of believing by faith in Christ’s gospel of salvation by faith alone.

Clearly Paul has this in mind when he tells the church that Christ “gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age…”

“You have been given freedom,” Paul declares!  “Don’t go back to the slavery you once knew!”

Freedom only comes through absolute surrender.

False gospels abound today just as they did in Paul’s day.

We are free from sin and death and free to live for Christ. This the truth of the gospel and the freed life we have to which we have been saved.  We do not live however we please because of our freedom, but we choose to live a life of freedom in the name of Jesus Christ.
