Treasure, week 3 – Rusty Hutson – November 19, 2017

This week: Thanksgiving – He is our highest treasure and the ultimate gift that we give thanks for.

Kingdom treasure: giving up everything of lesser value to gain the Kingdom, that which is of infinitely greater value.

Matthew 16:24-26:  Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”

  1. Deny Self — and all of your old, selfish desires
  2. Take up your Cross — there will be sacrifice that comes in choosing the Kingdom
  3. Follow Me — you must leave your old way of living and follow the Kingdom way

Seek the Better Treasure

  1. True Treasure means Real Sacrifice –

    • you must chose to give up the world’s treasures
    • sanctification – the process of learning to give up the world for the sake of the Kingdom
    • the Lie: more stuff = more life
    • Malachi 3:10
  2. Real Sacrifice Requires Actual Change

    • the old self never wants to change
    • new self chooses God out of genuine love for Him
    • start giving of your resources and watch what God does (“test me in this..” – Malachi 3:10)
    • Romans 12:1-2 – a transformed mind leads to transformed decisions
  3. Actual Change Yields Abundant Life

    • John 10:10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
