Sent, week 4 :: The Holy Spirit – Rusty Hutson, September 3, 2017

We are the church gathered in order to be the church scattered to the community.

Matthew 28:19-20 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Acts 1:7-8 – “He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””

Acts 2 – the global church is born as people here the word preached in their native tongue through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit…

  • Regenerates dead hearts to live (John 3)
  • Convicts us
  • Leads us
  • Comforts us
  • Encourages us
  • Empowers us

Key Truths of the Work of the Holy Spirit

1. We Can’t Go without the Holy Spirit

  • Luke 24:48-49 – “He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.””
  • our purpose in this life must be carried out through the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • we are not capable of his purpose for us on our power

2. We Can’t Be Strong without the Holy Spirit

  • He is the one who strengthens our faith
  • He is the one who helps us walk in obedience
  • Psalm 27:14 – “Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”

3. We Can’t Make Good Choices without the Holy Spirit

  • Carnal Christian – saved but continues to live under influence of the flesh
  • Redeemed Christian – the one who is being sanctified and is living more for Christ than for self.

At some point in your life, the Holy Spirit will call you to go somewhere or do something that your flesh doesn’t want to do.

Be prepared everyday.

You have no idea what tomorrow holds.

Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
