Rhythm – Rest and Work, week 7 – July 23, 2017

John 15:1-4 – “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”

  • Fruit is the natural outflow of an abiding life in Christ

If fruit is the result when want, the abiding in Christ is the thing we “do” in order for Christ to bear fruit in us.

“I am the true vine.”  Not the wayward sinful vine that Israel was, but the perfect, true, sinless vine.

Jesus says, “I am on the only one you want to stay connected to and grow from. Apart from me you can do nothing.”

Luke 10:41-42 – ““Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.””

– choose what is better → choose the one that is necessary: Jesus.

katharos – to remove or be throughly cleansed from (modern catharsis)

God will always remove anything that is unproductive or distracting (the sucker branches on plants). These are the things that don’t bear fruit but take energy away from the mission.

Only the Gardener can remove the unnecessary to make way for the good branches to bear more fruit.

Ephesians 4:31-32 – “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Bearing Fruit

The Kingdom flowing through us

Galatians 5:22-25 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
