What is my work? Why does it even matter?

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 – I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.

  • if your job is only about the paycheck, the identity and recognition you receive, or the validation you feel from it, Solomon’s word for that type of posture from Ecclesiastes is clear: meaningless.
  • Climbing the ladder? At the top of that ladder, the prize is not nearly as great as it appeared from the bottom, and there’s always another ladder to climb.

God has placed you on your path with a purpose. No one has, is, or ever will walk the same path that God has placed you on.

Unique and the Same

» You are a Unique Creation

Therefore, you have a unique purpose in this life. You are a child of the King.

Why you were born is far more important than when. You were born to represent God to this world.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

» You have a Unique Calling

“God, show me why I’m here!” We don’t often get to pick where we are → “So Bloom where you are planted.”

Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

» We have the Same Boss

God’s expectations are the same for all of us, regardless of our job description or position in this life:

Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

» We have the Same Priorities

  1. love God
  2. love your neighbor as yourself

In these two commands Jesus summed up all of God’s commandments and gave all of his disciples the keys to sharing his love for a dying world.

How do we do that on a daily basis?

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 → be and do good, finding satisfaction in your work

Work with everything you have in this life for the glory of God, and the world will notice.

We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
