This Sunday, May 1, you will see a big purple bus in our parking lot. It’s the exciting new BigHouse bus that functions as a mobile clothes closet and is used to serve children in foster care across the stage. The bus will be here at Cornerstone as our collection point for your donated swimsuits and towels to support BigHouse’s annual Swimsuit and Towel Drive.
Since 2009, BigHouse has hosted a Swimsuit and Towel Drive to collect new swimsuits and new beach towels for children in foster care. In addition, each beach towel is embroidered with the child’s name to make the gift extra special and uniquely their own. In 2011, the Swimsuit and Towel Drive went statewide. In the past five years, BigHouse has delivered 10,000 swimsuit and towel packages to children in foster care in Alabama. They rely heavily on the community to donate swimsuits, towels, and embroidery for this drive. This drive provides children in foster care with a summer necessity and a unique gift. According to Micah Melnick, Executive Director for the BigHouse, “each personalized towel tells the child, ‘You are valued by your community and loved by your Heavenly Father.’ We include a postcard in each package telling the child just that!”
BigHouse is a Christ-centered non-profit ministry in Opelika dedicated to meeting the needs and improving the quality of life of children in foster care in Lee County and across the state. BigHouse is also one of Cornerstone’s ministry partners. We hope you will participate! Bring your donations (swimsuit, towel or monetary) to the bus Sunday morning or Sunday evening at the Baptism Celebration. For more information, email email@example.com.
