If you drove past Cornerstone on Hamilton Road this past week you might have taken a double take. Many people were asking what was going on? Why was the Chick-fil-A cow out front? What were all those flags by the road?
If you haven’t already heard, Cornerstone hosted WinShape Camps for Communities. The Camps for Communities are day camps that combine sports, recreation, arts, Bible study and worship into one incredible week.
There are WinShape Camps all the way up the east coast to Virginia, across to Chicago, down to Austin, Texas, and then all throughout the southeast. WinShape offers 84 camps this summer.
WinShape Camps was established by Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, in 1985. Mr. Cathy wanted to provide a camp experience that would enable campers to sharpen their character, deepen their Christian faith and grow in their relationships with others. For Cornerstone it was our first time hosting a WinShape Camp. What we experienced was a face paced, exciting, well lead and very intentional camp that lived out Truett Cathy’s vision.
One of the things that attracted Cornerstone to the WinShape Camps experience was the focus on the community. They encouraged us to raise funds and invite kids from the Auburn-Opelika community who might not be able to attend a camp like this. It was definitely a mix of Cornerstone kids and kids from all around our area who don’t even attend Cornerstone.
Here is our WinShape Camp by the numbers:
- 290 campers
- 100 volunteers
- 26 WinShape staffers
- 36 full and 12 partial scholarships awarded to campers
- $11,000 given by Cornerstone families to support the scholarships
- 50 kids either gave their life to Jesus or are “on the bubble”
It was without a doubt one of the best weeks at Cornerstone Church. Rusty, our Senior Pastor, stood up in front of 290 campers and all their parents and families and said we will being doing the camp again next year. About as quick as he committed to next year, the Cornerstone staff set a goal to double the number of scholarships we can offer.
God was definitely at work this past week in the life of Cornerstone Church!
