The leaders of the Clark-Bruce Small Group, after seeing the information on the church website about the Samaritan Purse Operation Christmas Child, emailed the members of the group to see if they would be interested in taking this on as a group project. The response was unanimously in favor. A copy of the Operation Christmas Child brochure was emailed to make sure all members had the guidelines needed for selecting gifts and packing instructions. It was decided that each member would bring items, based on the gift suggestions, to the next small group meeting on October 26. The small group leaders had additional shoe boxes, forms, rubber bands, scotch tape and other packing materials to complete the project. Boxes were packed, checks written and forms were filled out and checked for accuracy. Members that were not present for the meeting dropped their boxes off at the Bruce’s house the following week, and all boxes were delivered to the church on November 3.
As Franklin Graham, President of Samaritan’s Purse said, “Every shoebox offers an opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with a hurting child.” It was a simple project that made a difference for several children, and at the same time, it touched our hearts as we realized the impact that this simple act of kindness had on our lives. Mark writes in 9:36-37, “Jesus took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.’”
There is still time for other small groups to participate in this worthwhile project. Information is available at the welcome desk in the lobby of the church and on the website here. Boxes may be delivered to Cornerstone Church up until Sunday, November 16. The boxes should be taken to Rock City in the children’s area and placed on the stage.
Other outside projects our small group has participated in includes, Free Gift Wrapping Saturday at Tiger Town (December 2013) and My Jerusalem Work Day (February 2014). Be sure to check cornerstonebuzz.org to see what is going on at Cornerstone Church and where your small group can participate. Contact email@example.com for more information.
