There is something very special about being in the courtyard at Lee-Scott and having the Cornerstone family from all three sites gathered together. The outdoor amphitheater in the shadow of the large cross is the place where we had the opportunity to celebrate the new life and restoration our Heavenly Father brings to those who step out in faith. Witnessing family and friends commit themselves to Christ through the covenant of baptism was so life giving.
On a day when the weather was so threatening, it appeared that His kingdom was breaking through, holding back all of the storms around us so that we could celebrate this time together. Not being a typical baptism experience, we were outside surrounded by thunderstorms with a full band (and all of their electrical equipment), a metal trough filled with water, footballs and frisbees flying all around, kids climbing in the tree tops, and the wonderful scent of barbeque filling the air.
Finally it was time to get down to business. We all went to our chairs and picnic blankets that had been placed earlier so that we could share a beautiful time of praise and worship as we witness and embrace a new and deeper commitment in their relationship with our Father. I watched their faces in anticipation as they stepped into the cold water. Arising from the submersion, each one smiled with joy and excitement of new life…the true CELEBRATION we are all here to share. I thought about each one and welcomed myself into the opportunity to hopefully get to know each person and their personal testimony/stories.
I thought about God’s joy and delight as He was gazing through those storm clouds which He was holding back for us. I could sense the love of our Father’s arms surrounding us. I often think of images through songs, and the song “Forever Reign” came to my mind. The chorus says, “I’m running to your arms, I’m running to your arms, the riches of your love, will always be enough, nothing compares to Your embrace, light of the world forever reign.” It is so exciting to know that regardless of the situations life may bring, that it is through our willingness to abandon ourselves and run into His arms that we can truly experience His unfailing love, freedom, and joy! I pondered, am I inviting Jesus in to all places of my life?
Baptism is the beginning of a life-long journey of faith. Our Baptism Celebration was a nurturing, life-giving fellowship and a time of celebration and praise for what Christ has done and how He continues to use all of our life stories to further His kingdom.
